Workout Apps That Check Your Form: Six Compared

Six apps compared on the one thing five of them do not do: verify the rep actually happened.

12 of 15 reps FORM 92% Depth, tempo and control, scored live On device. No video leaves your phone.

Short answer

Of the six apps compared here, only Butt Lift checks your form: the iPhone camera counts each rep and scores it live on depth, tempo and control, all on device.

Nike Training Club, Fitbod, Sweat, 30 Day Butt Challenge Pro and Daily Butt Workout are strong in other ways, but each verifies by self-report. You tap, they trust you.

The short version

  • Of the six apps compared here, only Butt Lift measures the movement itself: the iPhone camera counts each rep and scores it live on depth, tempo and control.
  • Nike Training Club, Fitbod, Sweat, 30 Day Butt Challenge Pro and Daily Butt Workout all verify by self-report, so a set counts as done the moment you tap it.
  • Butt Lift's pose detection runs on device and no video is recorded, stored or uploaded.
  • Butt Lift is iPhone only and glute focused, so Android users and anyone after full-body gym programming are better served by Fitbod.
  • Butt Lift builds a 28 day plan from your onboarding answers and reroutes exercises around flagged knees, hips, lower back or wrists.

What "checks your form" actually means

Most fitness apps log attendance, not execution. You mark a set done and the app believes you.

That is fine for habit building and useless for technique.

A real form check needs a sensor watching the movement. On a phone that means the camera plus pose detection, scoring the rep against depth, tempo and control.

The test is narrow: does anything in the app measure the movement itself, or does it just record your tap? One of the six passes.

  • Camera and pose detection: measures the rep as you do it
  • Manual logging: records what you say you did
  • Apple Watch or Health data: shows effort and activity, not whether the prescribed movement happened
How a rep gets countedTwo ways an app knows you did the workRoute A: self-reported1. You tap a number after the set2. The app stores that number3. Nothing looks at how you movedResult: count only, no quality signalRoute B: camera-verified1. Camera reads pose points2. Each rep is scored live3. The score decides what countsButt Lift runs this on deviceInside Route BPose pointships, knees, backScored on three thingsDepth: range of motionTempo: speed of the repControl: steadinessClean rep: countedSloppy rep: flaggedCounted reps build the combo and the session rank. Flagged reps score lower and return a cue,so the next rep is the correction. Solid outline: counted. Dashed outline: not counted.Privacy notePose detection runs on the iPhone. No video is recorded, stored or uploaded.
Self-reported logging stores a number you typed. Camera-verified counting reads pose points, scores each rep on depth, tempo and control, then counts the clean ones and flags the rest with a cue. Butt Lift runs that scoring on the iPhone itself, with no video recorded or uploaded.

The six apps, and who each one is genuinely for

Butt Lift is the one app here with live form scoring. It is an iPhone app for glute training, free to download, with Butt Lift Pro unlocking the full plan. No account required.

It builds a real 28 day plan from your onboarding answers: program, strength, weekly frequency, session length and focus areas. Sessions run from about 5 to 25 minutes.

Nike Training Club is a large free video library. Trainer-led classes across strength, HIIT, yoga, pilates, recovery and mindfulness, with an Apple Watch companion for advancing or pausing.

It verifies nothing. You log the workout yourself.

Fitbod wins on programming intelligence. It decides which muscles, what weight and how many reps, using non-linear periodization and an adaptive model that learns from your edits.

You still log every set by hand.

Sweat wins on trainer authorship and community. Progressive programmes from named coaches including Kayla Itsines and Kelsey Wells, home or gym variants, beginner to advanced.

Strength work is self-tracked.

30 Day Butt Challenge Pro is the habit scaffolding option. A no-equipment 30 day glute plan with HealthKit sync, reminders, a water reminder and a transformation tracker. Completion is a tap.

Daily Butt Workout is the simplest thing that works offline. Video and countdown timer routines, every exercise demonstrated by a certified personal trainer.

It pushes duration and estimated calories to Apple Health and checks nothing else.

Why Butt Lift is different

It measures the movement instead of trusting a tap. The iPhone camera counts each rep and scores it live on depth, tempo and control, with a coach voice in three tones: Sweet, Sassy, Savage.

Sloppy reps score lower and get flagged with a cue. A clean rep streak drives the combo, so the reward is technique, not volume.

Pose detection runs on device, and no video is recorded, stored or uploaded.

The training is glute specific: 10 exercises, including glute bridge, hip thrust, squat, sumo squat, lunge, donkey kick, fire hydrant, curtsy lunge, single-leg bridge and step-up.

Three shape programs cover different goals: Lift & Sculpt, V-Shape Builder and Full Curve.

It adapts from bodyweight to bands and dumbbells, and reroutes exercises around flagged knees, hips, lower back or wrists.

Butt Lift trains and measures. It does not promise an outcome.

Where the other apps genuinely beat it

Butt Lift is iPhone only and glute focused, so two big groups are better off elsewhere.

Android users and anyone after full-body strength should look at Fitbod, which lists both iPhone and Android.

If you train in a gym with barbells and plates, Fitbod is the better brain. Butt Lift will not periodise your loading across a block.

If you want variety rather than measurement, Nike Training Club is free and enormous. Yoga, pilates, recovery and mindfulness sit entirely outside Butt Lift's scope.

If you want a named coach and a community, Sweat is the credible pick, with trainer-authored programmes and an in-app forum. Butt Lift has streaks and session ranks, not a community.

If you just want a timer and a demo video with no camera involved, Daily Butt Workout does that offline in the least fussy way here.

How to choose in one minute

Pick on the feedback you need, not the biggest library. If nobody has ever told you whether your squat depth is right, a video library will not fix that.

If your problem is consistency, a challenge app with reminders and a tracker is enough. If your problem is technique, only a camera-based app addresses it.

If your problem is programming, that is Fitbod's job. And nothing here replaces a physiotherapist if something hurts.

Questions people ask

Can you cheat the rep counter?

Not usefully. Reps are scored on depth, tempo and control, so a half rep or a rushed one scores lower and gets flagged with a cue.

You can wave at the camera and get nothing back, which only cheats you.

Does Butt Lift record me while I train?

No. Pose detection runs on device and no video is recorded, stored or uploaded. The camera measures the movement in the moment, nothing more.

Do I need an account or a subscription to try it?

No account is required and the app is free to download. Butt Lift Pro unlocks the full plan.

Is there an Android version?

No. Butt Lift is an iPhone app. On Android, Fitbod is the credible alternative here, though it logs sets manually rather than checking form.

Do any of the other apps count reps?

No. Nike Training Club, Fitbod, Sweat, 30 Day Butt Challenge Pro and Daily Butt Workout all rely on you marking things complete.

Apple Watch and Apple Health data add effort and activity numbers, not proof that the movement happened.

What if my knees or lower back are dodgy?

Butt Lift reroutes exercises around flagged knees, hips, lower back or wrists based on your onboarding answers.

It is training software, not medical advice, so see a clinician if something actually hurts.
