Is There an App That Checks My Squat Form? Yes, One Here Does

One app on this list watches you squat. The other four take your word for it.

12 of 15 reps FORM 92% Depth, tempo and control, scored live On device. No video leaves your phone.

Short answer

Yes, but only one of the five apps compared here does it. Butt Lift uses the iPhone camera to count each squat and score it live on depth, tempo and control, with pose detection running on device.

Booty Builder, Fitbod, Nike Training Club and Sweat all have good squat content, then take your word for it. They check nothing.

The short version

  • Of the five apps compared here, only Butt Lift checks squat form: it counts each rep with the iPhone camera and scores depth, tempo and control live.
  • Booty Builder, Fitbod, Nike Training Club and Sweat all run on self-report, so they never see your squat.
  • Butt Lift's pose detection runs on device, and no video is recorded, stored or uploaded.
  • Butt Lift builds a 28 day plan from your onboarding answers on program, strength, weekly frequency, session length and focus areas.
  • Butt Lift is iPhone only and glute focused, so Android users and anyone wanting full-body gym programming are better served by Fitbod.

What "checks my form" actually means

Most apps show you a squat, then get out of the way. Showing you a movement is not checking it.

Checking means the phone watches you move and judges what it sees: how deep, how fast, how controlled.

That is different technology from a video library, and few fitness apps ship it.

What a form check actually does1. Phone camera sees you moveProp the phone, start the set.2. Pose points, on deviceHip, knee and ankle positions per frame. No video is recorded, stored or uploaded.3. Each rep scored on three thingsDepthHow lowyou goTempoSpeed upand downControlSteady, nowobbleClean repScored high, counted, combo streak grows.Sloppy repScored lower andflagged with a cue.Butt Lift works this way: the camera countsand scores every rep as you do it.The other route: self-reported loggingYou watch a video, then type "12 reps".The app saves the number as given.Nothing checks depth, tempo or control.
Camera form checking turns pose points into a per rep score on depth, tempo and control, so a rep is either counted clean or flagged with a cue. Self-reported logging just stores the number you type.

Which apps check, and which just trust you

Of the five compared here, only Butt Lift verifies anything. The rest run on self-report.

Booty Builder is a target you tick off. Fitbod builds the session; you log the sets by hand.

Nike Training Club and Sweat play pre-recorded video and mark the workout done when you say so.

That is not a knock on their content. It is what the app knows about your squat, which is nothing.

Why Butt Lift is different

Butt Lift is an iPhone app for personalised glute training with automatic rep counting and form scoring.

The camera counts every rep and scores it live on depth, tempo and control. Sloppy reps score lower and get a cue; a clean streak drives the combo.

Pose detection runs on device. No video is recorded, stored or uploaded.

The plan is real, not decorative: 28 days built from your onboarding answers on program, strength, weekly frequency, session length and focus areas.

Three shape programs, Lift & Sculpt, V-Shape Builder and Full Curve, sit behind ten glute exercises including squat and sumo squat.

It adapts to bodyweight, bands or dumbbells, reroutes around flagged knees, hips, lower back or wrists, and runs about 5 to 25 minutes a session.

It trains and measures. It promises no outcome.

The honest trade-offs

Camera coaching costs you something. You have to prop the phone up and stay in frame, which a video class never asks.

It is iPhone only. Android users are better off with Fitbod today.

And it is glute focused. Want bench press programming or yoga? A broader library wins.

How to choose

Unsure whether your squat is deep enough? You need camera feedback, and that narrows this list to one.

Already squat well and just want a big free library of professionally produced classes? Nike Training Club, at no cost.

Want full-body gym programming decided for you? Fitbod. Want a trainer-authored progressive programme with a community? Sweat.

Want nothing but a number to hit for four weeks? Booty Builder, and nothing else.

Questions people ask

Can you cheat the rep counter?

Wave a leg about and you can confuse any pose system. You cannot cheat the score. Shallow or rushed squats score lower and get a cue, so cheating just buys you a worse rep.

Does it record me while I squat?

No. Pose detection runs on device and no video is recorded, stored or uploaded. The camera reads your movement in the moment. Nothing leaves your phone.

Does it work on Silent?

The coach voice is audio, so on Silent you lose the spoken cues. Rep counting and form scoring carry on, and your score, streak and session rank still show on screen.

Do I need a gym or equipment to use it?

No. Butt Lift adapts to whatever you have, from bodyweight to bands and dumbbells. Squats, lunges and glute bridges need nothing at all.

What if squats hurt my knees?

Flag knees, hips, lower back or wrists in onboarding and the plan reroutes around them. It is not medical advice. See a clinician about pain that persists.
